When Spanish explorers arrived, they called Siquijor the Island of Fire (Isla del Fuego) because of the swarms of fireflies that can be seen at night. No doubt helped by the nearly-magical illumination of the island, it is also known as the Island of Healing because of the medicinal potions produced here. Siquijor is said to be a mystical island, full of witches and other supernatural phenomena. However, the mystical traditions and the practice of witchcraft, for which the island is famed, is more myth and legend than reality. In 1884, building commenced on St. Isidore’s Church and Convent using indigenous coral stones and hardwood; it is a building well worth visiting.
